En Camino seeks to provide opportunities for success for migrant children and immigrant children. One of the vital tools to empower is education. Four years ago, we began a pilot project on Thursday afternoons, "Escuela Familiar" (Family School) in an effort to help children who come from a Spanish speaking homes succeed in school. Thanks to the First Presbyterian Church in Fostoria, Ohio who has donated space and volunteers for our Family School since 2002! Young toddlers are exposed to the English language, colors, manipulatives, computers, Baby Einstein, and other developmentally appropriate activities. Some school aged children work with the assistance of a volunteer tutor to complete homework assignments, and strengthen math and reading skills through Leap Frog materials. Finally, some begin to read and write in Spanish. Adults have the option of studying literacy, English, GED, citizenship, accent reduction, writing, computers, and internet.
