One
of the services that En Camino offers to the
newcomers of Northwest Ohio are classes in
English. They are typically offered on site
in the migrant labor camps. Classes in the camps for English Language Learners were offered this summer in the Fremont, Fort Seneca,Tiffin, and Bloomdale camps.

|

|
| Also classes are offered for immigrant workers at various sites year round. Classes are initiated in response to the interest of recent immigrants moving into the area.Teachers use various materials to strengthen conversation skills. Students enjoy using the Oxford Picture Dictionary, Ellis, and Side by Side. These interactive computer programs reinforce pronunciation, spelling, and writing. |

Leer Para Aprender "reading to learn" |
|
|
In July 2006, the
Racine Dominicans awarded En Camino
a three year grant for intensive reading in the migrant camps.
"Leer Para Aprender "(Reading to Learn) identifies
migrant childen who are at risk. The children take a pre-test to determine their "learning path", use Leapfrog learning materials to improve vocabulary, and take a final test. Volunteers work one-on-one with the migrant pre-school and school age children. Childen enjoy incentives when they complete their task.

POSADA |
| In
the Hispanic community, the novena for Christmas,
December 16-24, is observed by the celebrations
of the posadas. Posada means "shelter", giving
welcome to those who come to us as strangers.
Mary and Joseph came to Bethlehem as strangers
and so had difficulty being accepted by the
community there. |
|
|
|
In
the reenactment of this historical event, members
of
the community who portray Mary and Joseph knock
on the door of a home, seeking shelter. The
people inside, seeing that they are strangers,
say that there is no room, that they have no
time. Why are these people on the streets anyway? |
| Finally realizing that this is indeed the foster father and the mother of Jesus who is to be born, the holy couple is allowed to come in. |
 |
|
|
Following
are more songs, reflections on Advent scriptures,
the faith sharing, and finally a fiesta to which
everyone has contributed. |
|
As
we ponder this custom, may we promise ourselves
never
to refuse posada to anyone who comes in
the name of Jesus?
